How do I join a house?
To join a house, you would sign up for an account and do the sorting questions. Just like Harry experienced during his sorting the Sorting Hat will take your preference into account. We also see this potential for more than one house with Hermione, but apparently she did not have a preference so the sorting hat made its own decision to put her in Gryffindor rather than Ravenclaw.
Do you have step by step instructions for signing up?
Step 1: Register
Visit the Register page.
Step 2: Choose a username
Enter a username that is accepted by the remote system.
All usernames are lower case, you cannot use upper case
letters. If you try to use a character and it does not
work, that character is not allowed.
Step 3: Click the "Check Availability" button
You will know it is accepted because you will see a QR
code that looks similar to this:
Step 4: Create Your Authenticator Profile
The best app to use to scan the QR code is
Google Authenticator which is published
directly by Google. There are others like Authy.
Scan the QR code into your favorite app to create a profile
Step 5: Record Your Backup Codes
Copy the section listed under backup codes to your
password manager. We recommend BitWarden for password
management
Step 6: Enter a Code from your Authenticator App
Using the code generated by Google Authenticator or
your favorite app/browser extension for this TOTP
secret, you need to enter a current code into the box
below the text "Enter the code from your Authenticator app"
Step 7: Click the "Complete Registration" button
Click "Complete Registration" button to complete your
registration on the website and you will be taken to
the login page where you will enter your username and
potentially the current code in your Google Authenticator
compatible application.
How do I submit my own trivia question?
Once you have been sorted and you are placed into a house, there will be a Submit My Own Question button below the quiz categories in your house common room.
What if I forgot my password?
This website does not use passwords in a traditional sense. When you sign up, you create a two factor profile and your "password" changes every 30 seconds based on this profile. During this account creation, you are given the chance to record your "backup codes" and if you lose your two-factor profile or it stops working for some reason, you can use the backup codes to recover your profile. A second method is in your user profile that you can access from your common room. You can set something called your Security Phrase. If you set this and then request a reset of your username and you include this phrase in your request, we MAY be able to assist.
Why do you not use regular passwords?
This website creator chose to use this method for ease of administration. We shift some of the resposibility for proper account management to the end user, and the end user gains privacy as a result. We no longer require a users email address for the purposes of account management. If a user chooses NOT to record their backup codes, then it is their loss if they lose access to their account, we have no way of verifying the user via email so all requests for account recovery are ignored. This privacy has additional benefits.
How are points awarded?
For Questions based on Sort Order, Multiple Answer, and Multiple Choice, there is a proscribed answer and you get full points if you get the correct answer. For short answer, there are typically one or more answers that it can be and you will get full points if you type one of these. If you do not spell it correctly, you will get zero points. Each time the system automatically assigns zero points, it will be reviewed eventually and you will get some points for a mis-spell. For long-answer questions on the NEWTS, each quesiton is worth 50 to 100 points and you are awarded the average points granted by the moderators who mark your answers. If three moderators gave you 36, 42 and 44 points respectively on a long answer question, you would be granted 41 points.
